Once again, an America-centric poll. I sincerely apologize to my friends in foreign lands.

The musical 1776 is, at its core, historical fanfiction about the Founding Fathers: 3+ hours of "missing scenes" from the three weeks during which the Declaration of Independence was written, debated, edited, and signed (compressed for dramatic purposes, but frankly, astoundingly close to the truth). Canon is composed of primary sources, such as the various drafs of the Declaration, recorded resolutions and petitions of the Second Continental Congress, letters to and from the congressmen and their friends/family/political allies, missives from General Washington to Congress, etc. Canonical quotes and dialogue are interspersed with imagined dialogue, internal monologues, extrapolations of emotional motivations, and songs. Plus, it's fucking hilarious. I discover again and again that it's a favorite among people involved in fandom.

ETA: By "Official Musical of Fandom," I mean *outside of fannish sources*, i.e. discounting musical episodes of fannish shows.

Sadly, I think "Once More With Feeling" is the OMoF. But I would like to be wrong about that.

Ahhhh - I should have said "official musical of fandom that comes from outside fandom." My bad.

ETA Added disclaimer to post. Thanks for heads-up.

I would like please to check the "WHAT THE HELL GOES ON IN NEW YORK" box two or three more times. [flail]

HEE! I love poor Morris's monologue there. "Mr. President, have you ever been present at a meeting of the New York legislature? They speak very fast and very loud, and nobody listens to anybody else, with the result that nothing ever gets done. I beg the Congress's pardon."

It has apparently NOT CHANGED IN TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTY-THREE YEARS.

As you can imagine, the line always got a bout of rousing applause during the Broadway run. :)

I imagine the audience has to applaud and howl with laughter or else just burst into tears. :-)

You didn't have my favorite choice: You: 're obnoxious and disliked; that cannot be denied

:D I stayed away from the classic, I know. I figured the contraction separation made it less elegant. Yes, I'm that much of a dork.

A friend of mine in college was wild about this show and we used to listen to the soundtrack constantly, but I've never actually seen it, on film or onstage.

You can rent it, buy it, Netflix it, or stream it from Netflix if you have that service.

Poor Franklin and his turkey fetish. :D

Have I mentioned that I'm working with John Cullum again next week? I chatted with him about 1776 a few years ago and he was so excited that a young person knew of the play (and the movie).

ZOMG give him a big hug from me and tell him I adore him in 1776 and that I watch it with friends every July 4. I met him at the stage door of Urinetown and he was utterly utterly charming and a big hugger.

One of my most favorite musicals ever! You left a good one out though: "At a stage in life when most men prosper, I'm reduced to living in Philadelphia."

I left out a lot of good ones -- and I didn't want to insult the Philadelphians. *g* I mean, really, the film is so quotable.

If this is true, then 'Kiss Me Kate' is the official remix musical of fandom.

The good: I love 1776 but have not watched it in years.

The bad: I love 1776 but have not watched it in years.

The perverse: Given my lack of 1776, I have this sudden urge to stuff my CD player with Stan Freberg Presents the United States of America, Volume One: The Early Years
