Once again, an America-centric poll. I sincerely apologize to my friends in foreign lands.

The musical 1776 is, at its core, historical fanfiction about the Founding Fathers: 3+ hours of "missing scenes" from the three weeks during which the Declaration of Independence was written, debated, edited, and signed (compressed for dramatic purposes, but frankly, astoundingly close to the truth). Canon is composed of primary sources, such as the various drafs of the Declaration, recorded resolutions and petitions of the Second Continental Congress, letters to and from the congressmen and their friends/family/political allies, missives from General Washington to Congress, etc. Canonical quotes and dialogue are interspersed with imagined dialogue, internal monologues, extrapolations of emotional motivations, and songs. Plus, it's fucking hilarious. I discover again and again that it's a favorite among people involved in fandom.

ETA: By "Official Musical of Fandom," I mean *outside of fannish sources*, i.e. discounting musical episodes of fannish shows.

Sadly, I think "Once More With Feeling" is the OMoF. But I would like to be wrong about that.

Ahhhh - I should have said "official musical of fandom that comes from outside fandom." My bad.

ETA Added disclaimer to post. Thanks for heads-up.

HEE! I love poor Morris's monologue there. "Mr. President, have you ever been present at a meeting of the New York legislature? They speak very fast and very loud, and nobody listens to anybody else, with the result that nothing ever gets done. I beg the Congress's pardon."

Have I mentioned that I'm working with John Cullum again next week? I chatted with him about 1776 a few years ago and he was so excited that a young person knew of the play (and the movie).

ZOMG give him a big hug from me and tell him I adore him in 1776 and that I watch it with friends every July 4. I met him at the stage door of Urinetown and he was utterly utterly charming and a big hugger.

And William Daniels, when Dr. and Mrs. Craig on St. Elsewhere were to go to Philly and Independence Square, sang a bit of "Sit Down, John" out of nostalgia, and they put it on the show.

As you know, I *love* this musical. I saw it on B'way in its original run and then the revivial with Brent Spiner, *and* the recent kick-ass Papermill Playhouse production (who knew Dickinson could be sexy?) have video, DVD and extended DVD versions, both soundtracks, etc. and I maintain that more people have learned about the Am Revolution from this show than all the US History 101 high school courses combined.

And yes, William Daniels' John A is smokin' hot. So is Ken Howard's Jefferson.

Oooh - who played the leads at Papermill? Anyone I know? (You know Papermill is like, 10 minutes from my parents' house in South Orange. I used to go there all the time - met Robert Vaughn there during Inherit the Wind.

And I thought Dickinson was sexy in the movie. But we all have different definitions of sexy.

Gentlemen of the Congress, I say to thee NOM JOHN DICKINSON.

The first time I heard Isaac Asimov speak in person, I was shocked by his voice, which wasn't at all what I'd been imagining. It was some years later that I realized that I'd expected him to sound like Benjamin Franklin, on whom I'd imprinted, and who was smart and funny and patient too.

Indeed, Tom does "play the violin" (heh), but I have to say that, though I love me some Ken Howard, that is the WORST fake-violin playing EVER in the movies EVER.
