Why am I not surprised that the first line in her lj bio is "My Name is Andrea and I am a Christian that loves God with all of my heart," but the second one is "I will not be tolerant...."
On behalf of my entire state, I apologize. Heck, I'll even apologize on behalf of the cows, the pigs, and the corn and the soybeans while I'm at it; after all, I suspect that a bushel of soybeans could probably out-argue her.
Oh, man. The memories! I was taking a Current Events "discussion" elective in my senior year of high school and one girl quite honestly believed this. The teacher's expression of dumbfounded shock when he clued in that she meant it is one I badly wished I could have caught on film. He had thought she was kidding. She thought he was making fun of the rest of the class by pretending to think she was kidding. Or something. Ironically, said girl was well known for smoking a blunt before homeroom every morning. Wonder if that was advised in the bible. Anyway.
Yikes. I mean, even if you go with the modern idea of "gay" of an identity with a movement (rather than people just having same-sex sex), that existed by then. Like here in Germany gay rights activists published books arguing that it was natural to have homosexual sex in the 1860s, and there were public demands to decriminalize m/m sex and even for same-sex marriage etc. There were organizations with records, publications and petitions in parliament, sexuality research being done and published, so it's not as if the gay movement was all invisible or underground by the late 19th century or some kind of backwards projection.
omg, *that* is what all the tweets have been about ! i've seen them pop up but have been busy with something else and haven't really been following how the thread was running. I think I love hubbit and need to go friend him.
The truly amusing thing? Two of the shows she watches (Chronicles of Narnia and Smallville) have been slammed for having underage characters/actors with older adults. Apparently, homosexuality = not good. Any expression of heterosexuality, even if punishable by law, = good.
It's 5.30 in the morning here, and all the talk in that thread of mistranslations of the Bible is making me want to know what the new official Swedish translation of the Old Testament says about the destruction of Sodom and Gomorra, but I only have the slightly modernized 1917 translation at home, and the online version of the shiny new one is refusing to load properly, and why am I not in bed yet?
This is all by way of saying that the original commenter makes me grieve for the world, but all the other posters bring me fresh hope for humanity by means of scholarly discussion. ♥
It's going to be very interesting to see how Matthew Bomer's career develops, in light of his, as I understand it, self-stated bisexuality. It feels rare and new to me, that a US tv channel is so strongly promoting an actor as the hot new thing when he's already known to not be straight.

Well, I have hopes - Neil Patrick Harris is thriving as a romantic lead on his show, and nobody gives a shit--in fact, ratings are better this year than in any of the previous seasons. My generation, and younger, by and large just don't care about it.
On behalf of people named Andrea, I apologize thoroughly.
Excellent trouncing and education of her over at that thread, though. I think I headdesked myself into a coma over her "God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah for homosexuality" statement. And jeez, the New Living Translation? Really?
I'm normally not bitchy to theists who are actually nice people, but this bint had me clenching my fists to keep from responding, "Well, that's how you know your god is manmade - when he hates all the same people you do."
Sadly, I know people like this. Even sadder, I'm *related* to people like this. Or at least I used to be -- last time I saw him, he seemed to have gotten hit by a clue bus. I have hopes that it continues to run over him periodically.
I have sadly known too many conservative Christians who spread such hate in the name of God. My only response to her (http://community.livejournal.com/whitecollar_tv/27514.html?thread=138106#t138106) was one of reaching out, praying that she see the error of her ways.
I'm impressed with both the prescience of the Bible to predict homosexuality, and with evolution. For the human race to evolve so quickly--a hundred years for there to be gay humans!--is remarkable. (And in a time of over-population, who could not believe that rechanneling sexual desire in a non-reproductive way isn't a good thing?)
