Oh, honey, no. Just... no.

It's just... I know I shouldn't even bother; I don't even know the woman, and there's obviously no point, but... it's not that she's wrong on the Internet so much as that she's self-aggrandizing, holier-than-thou, tiresome, uninformed, and stupid on the Internet.

Gaze upon this sparkling gem: Fans who write non-porn stories about TV shows are a different kind of writer. If they love the shows, which are a group production to begin with, that much, what the hell, they probably don't have the taste and imagination to write anything original anyway.

Only people with no taste or imagination love TV! True fax!

I can name twenty television shows off the top of my head that are so far and away better than anything she has ever written that they're not even in the same ballpark, and I don't even have to open one of her books to know that.

WTF, lady.

But there was supposed to be a :-) at the end of that sentence. It's not like she was mean or anything.

Yeah, yet another arrogant, pretentious published writer ranting about fanfic. I'm shocked, I tell you. Shocked!

I had to comment, if only to point out that hey, you know? Those faceless fanfic authors are people who might be giving her INCOME. Not wise to be patronising and condescending about them.

Fanfic writers give her income? Unpossible! All they do is STEAL.

Sheesh, didn't Diana Gabaldon teach you anything?

Her pro writer's page looks like less professional than a lot of fanfic authors' pages. And her profile page says she spent "her adolescence in Southern California, from whence she fled to the Bay Area just in time to join a number ofthe Revolutions then in progress". Apart from the really sad-ass third person, it proves she's old, and probably crotchety. :P

Clearly, she has never been taught that "from whence" is redundant. Both her bio pages are grand celebrations of overall pretension and the wanton misuse of commas and clauses.

"My father, whom I never knew, being as he was killed in the Battle of the Bulge, was a roofer;..." What's so wrong with "My father was a roofer. I never knew him; he was killed in the Battle of the Bulge."?

Brevity and clarity. Hallmarks of halfway-decent writing.

being as he was killed

...

At the very least, I'd have underlined that, and written "awk" in red above it. At worst, we'd be having a short after-class meeting about how pretension!=depth.

As I always point out, the authors who complain are the ones who write closest to fanfic themselves. And they mostly write horror, SF and tie-in fiction, which means they are in a position to be most threatened by folks reading fanfic and not buying their books.

But historically, this little war goes all the way back to the beginnings of Trek fandom, which grew out of SF. The SF folks [at that time, mostly men] were shocked--- shocked! --- that the fans [at that time, mostly women] would *presume* that they might write stories about Kirk and Spck themselves. How dare they!

Same war, still going on. Like the Middle East and all long, long time wars, it's about turf. And I expect, like the Middle East, it will continue for all time.

I must tell you that your comment made me flash back to the day I walked into the dealers' room at my first Trek con in 1973 and saw table after table of zines. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Thanks so much for triggering that memory.

I am sure that everything she has ever written has been a completely original thought. She obviously is divinely inspired to write things that have never been influenced by anything that she has ever read, seen or heard.

How can we, poor creatures of the earth, stand against her shining example of literary excellence?

...:p

Yes. This. Obviously she has higher standards than, say, Shakespeare.

Date: 2010-05-14 03:11 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] surreal-44.livejournal.com
Funny you should mention Shakespeare, because she argues that even if he borrowed from works of his time, he at least turned them into something new and original.

....

Of course, she failed to realize that while fanfiction authors write for pure enjoyment (and reviews!), Shakespeare wrote for profit.

....

But still, obviously, fanfic writers are in the wrong!

OMG, I hadn't ever seen any of her posts. Now that I have, I can't honestly think of any other way to characterize her than to use the same words you have. You've covered every base, I think, and succinctly.

No wait, I have to say this one thing: I'm so glad to see that she knows what porn is since so many learned people have failed to define it. That kind of puts her right over the top for complete Douche-baggery in my book.
