I was going to title the post "Oh, Harry Potter fandom, never change." But really, I want to title it "Oh, Harry Potter fandom, STFU and go away, you're fucking stupid."

Oh my God.

"YEARS AGO." Ladies and gentlemen, Snape/Hermione fanfiction her friend wrote - YEARS AGO. In fandom. YEARS. And that's called SLASH. And you're stupid if you think otherwise.

This is the first that I’ve heard that “slash” must be between characters of the same sex. When my friend was writing much Snape/Hermoine pr0n years ago, everyone referred to it as “slash”.

Oh my God indeed.

There should be an entrance exam for fandom, with follow-up annual testing.

Question#2: Define slash.

I would not be averse to an entrance exam.

okay, I'll bite. What's Question #1?

I want a list nao.

proposals:

"Women writing about men having sex is misogynistic" True or false?
"It's important to figure out the correct OTP in a fandom. Everything else is wrong." True or False?
"Slash stories never have plot." True or false?

Also, and this is based on a similar discussion at Escapade a few years ago:

"Define PWP" (which someone was arguing could be a story without sex, because that's how they chose to define the term)

Bwaaaaaa ha ha ha. We really need this test. It could be like the SATs -- there could be a vocabulary section of fanfic cliches, and a spatial awareness part involving who can put what part where.

a.) plagiarism
b.) copyright violation
c.) unauthorized remix
d.) all of the above

A.) (d), all of the above. None of these have anything whatsoever to do with rape.

Bwa! I love how your commment slipped in after he started moderating because scalzi felt it was "a concrete (if snarky) bit of information correcting an earlier misapprehension." :-> Go you with the snark!

Oh, good grief.

I suppose that Harry Potter fandom is so vast that there are some corners that were never properly acclimated to fandom? I guess? Sheez.

Mostly it's that Harry Potter fandom exploded on to the internet via *young* people, who'd never even heard of fandom (that's not to say that people who'd been in fandom a while weren't also in HP fandom). And they all thought they'd made it up from whole cloth.

Good lord. "Years ago"??? Me feeling very ancient right now. ;)

LOVE your reply!

Frankly I was shocked that it went through, since once i posted I got the "we're now moderating replies" message. Usually he doesn't, so I thought, oh, well, at least I got it out of my system. :D

Well, now I'm curious, because I did read Snape/Hermione from time to time. Which story was this? Was it any good? Because I'm betting not, if she was never fully integrated into the fandom to realize what "slash" actually meant.

I define slash as portraying sexual orientations inappropriate to the character as portrayed in canon. This, of course, means that it is totally impossible to write Captain Jack Harkness slash.

From: [identity profile] tzikeh.livejournal.com
Yeah, there is that question of what to do with the term "slash" now that queer relationships actually, you know, EXIST on tv and in movies.

I'm on the fence about it, but I'll be curious to see how that all shakes out.

And, of course, the whole point of Jack Harkness is that he transcends "labels." :D

I've actually encountered fans before who wanted to call non-canon het "slash". I remember having discussions about this on a mailing list, I think 2002?
