My Fellow Americans,

It's a rotten time in this nation's history, both politically and economically. We have no idea if we'll ever recover. But here's the thing--"recover" means to regain a former better condition--hence the "re-" prefix. Let's not do that. Let's work toward a future better condition. We'll get there. We always do, in the end.

I wish for you all a happy, and healthy, day of celebration.

For those taking your laptops or iPads or the like to the beach, I have some suggestions for light beach reading - so light, there are summaries if you don't want to read the whole thing. Heck, they even have pictures!

The Declaration of Independence

The Constitution of the United States

The Bill of Rights

Amendments 11-27

I love that they have a scan of the original Declaration of Independence. It's in bad shape but the 1823 engraving (which I believe was done by transferring a layer of ink, I don't remember) seems to have held up beautifully.

I wish there was a way to embed audio. I'd love to contribute Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson singing "A Man Can't Be Too Careful What He Signs These Days", from "Stan Freberg Presents The United States Of America, Vol. 1: The Early Years".

And don't forget The Preamble!

Happy Independence Day!

:D I love the Preamble one, though I don't consider that one as a 1776 song since the Constitution came 11 years later. I linked to the Constitution as reading material only because more and more people are vigorously defending *their* version of it without having READ the fucking thing. (Hey, guys? There's no God or Jesus in the Constitution. Just an FYI.)
