At the official Adobe site, they're selling Adobe Illustrator CS5 for $599. The education price is $199. So, okay, that's awesome.

But then I did a general search online for Adobe Illustrator CS5 - and MOST places are selling it for $199.

...am I missing something really obvious?

Most resellers sell the educational version.

But if there's no difference, software-wise.... why would anyone buy the retail version? And how would Adobe be all right with people who don't have education "credentials" buying up the software at an insanely reduced price all over?

The retailers are required to get your academic credentials prior to selling to you.

The educational version is specifically tagged "not for commercial use," so I would imagine there might be metadata somewhere in any files the EDU version generates to indicate from which version it came.

Are you sure it's not an upgrade from the previous version? Because that sounds about right for an upgrade price (http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?EDC=2054386).

The full package is around $600 (http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?EDC=2054387).
