Well, for starters, Charles is from New York. Somehow, I don't think that's the case in the movieverse. ;) And there's Charles marrying an alien princess.
Yup. Alien princess.
:sticks fingers in ears, goes "la la la movie canon for me la la la:"
Apparently he married her - and both Erik and Charles' wives left them, because they were so close that there was no room for anyone else. (this is in more current canon, apparently)
loreleif is filling me in on lots and lots of good Charles/Erik comics canon.
He married her and was her consort for ages, lived with her off and on. Recently, though, I believe she's dumped him. (His evil kinda-sorta-twin-sister took over his body and made her do icky evil things and... yeah. Something like that.)
Well, Charles died at least once protecting Erik, in return for which Erik followed Charles' dream and formed and led the X-Men.
That'd be the issues leading up to and forming the Age of Apocalypse arc. Plus, IIRC, a couple alternate universes that crop up elsewhere. In the main timeline, though, Erik was the headmaster at Xavier's school for quite some time, whilst Charles was off with his alien princess. That's the New Mutant books.
And in Ultimate X-Men, which is a different canon entirely (essentially, a restart of the universe set in present day), they were "like brothers" once, and Charles says of Erik "the first time I met another adult mutant was like being hit by a thunderbolt. Far, far more powerful than being in love and our human wives knew it." Which leads to the breakup of his marriage. (Also in Ult. X-Men, Prof. X wears an AIDS ribbon. And I know it's stereotyping, but I'm sorry, I really *don't* know any straight guys who wear them.)

Welcome to the world of comics fandom. *g*
