Yes. You can see this storm from space. The frightening bit? You can't see much of the U.S. underneath it.

Yeah, I think I'll be catching up on a lot of tv and fanfiction for the next 48 hours...

Yes! That was exactly my reaction.

Fortunately, we have a lot of books.

Unfortunately, we don't have a fireplace.

Books are far more important than fireplaces. There are other ways to keep warm.

Indeed, but I have lots and lots of works that are in the public domain and can be re-acquired (or, in many of their cases, re-re-acquired) from Gutenberg, if push came to shove.

Also, yes, hordes of copies of articles from JSTOR / Ebsco, and, for that matter, tax forms and manuals from past years....

But no fireplace.

Which would make for an interesting engineering project.

I once said to my father "The snow was a lot deeper when I was in grade school" and he pointed out that uh, actually, I was a lot SHORTER back then.
Durr.
I will dress both kids up in snowsuits and take them out tomorrow. I think. When I'm sure that they won't blow away.

I think I must be, or at least the pilot was. I was in Florida, and last night my flight to NY for this morning was cancelled. But I was rerouted through Atlanta, changed flights and came into La Guardia no worse for wear exept for a bit more mileage running through the Atlanta airport between terminals. I still don't understand why flights Florida to NY were cancelled, but the Atlanta/NY flights went on time, and landed in such crappy weather. We landed in Georgia in a fog bank so thick we thought we were still in the air and suddenly we touched down. Here there's an ice storm and it's treacherous as fuck. But we went through. I completely thought I'd be stranded in Atlanta. I guess Delta might actually have a game plan after all.

That's AWESOME. in the old-fashioned sense of the word before it got co-opted. As in awe-inspiring. I mean, reading about all this and the personal toll gives you a picture in some ways, but this just... holy crap.

Yes - the true definition of AWESOME. That has to be close to two thousand miles across.

WHAT IS THIS I DON'T EVEN.

Seriously! I am kinda in shock. The plane had to have left O'Hare a little after 2 pm Central, and it was a little jump jet sort of thing, seating around 50 people.

I suspect I have used up ALL my travel luck for the year today alone.

Eeeeeeeeppppppp!!!!! o_o

For the first time in my life, I'm in a state that isn't in the area affected by that uber-storm. (Assuming correct placement of umlauts and possibly that fancy thing that looks like an o with a diagnoal line through it, I've no idea how to add them.)

I'm west of storm, but it's still crazy cold here, resulting in lots of closings. No one around here owns heavy-duty warm cloths, because it rarely gets THAT cold.

We're getting our third day off work tomorrow. This is unheard of. I was blithely going about my evening, planning on work tomorrow, and I hadn't even bothered to check to confirm, because of course we'd be back to work! Only we aren't!

Yeah-- the U is closed for the second straight day -- I'm off tomorrow too. Unheard of. And Chicago Public schools have declared a second snow day for tomorrow... I don't think they've done that in 20 years.

Looks like we ended up with around 8 inches, but apparently it's hard to tell because of the 40-mile-per-hour winds doing rearranging and redecorating....
