Anyone out there have a PS3 they watch .avi files on? If not .avi, then what kind of codec and/or file formats work? Can you watch from a USB stick as well as a burned DVD-R?

ETA:The folks I'm doing this for are not tech-savvy, so I really need answers to these questions, and not suggestions for alternatives. Many thanks!

Randomly, via friendsfriends--

You can stream all sorts of files, including avi and mkv, via ps3 media server (http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/).

Thanks, but this is for someone who doesn't do that and doesn't want to deal with tech (not particularly tech-oriented).

I watch .mp4 files on a USB stick on the PS3 all the time. Also, if you have something that's .m4v, you can just rename the extension to .mp4 and it works fine (I do this with the Rachel Maddow podcast all the time).

I've also watched DivX (and/or Xvid, I mix them up) .avi's this way.

I keep reading online that people have terrible trouble playing .avi files on PS3s. Can you convert .avis of ahems to .mp4, and not have shitty quality on the tv?

I could probably do it, because I have Adobe Media Encoder, but I don't know what the free/shareware situation is.

I haven't had any trouble with ahems.

If I put an ahem on my dropbox, can you grab it and test it on a USB stick on your PS3?

Strange that people have problems with avis. That's pretty much what I watch on the PS3.

I pop them on a USB stick and play them. You have to press the green triangle to view them but that's about it.

Husband says the PS3 supports many different types of avis nativley.
