This is the part that really grates me: I promise all the avid fans of The Hunger Games that we can easily deal with Jennifer’s hair color.

THAT'S NOT THE POINT. AT ALL. Ugh.

Word. Would it have killed them to cast someone, however unknown, who was actually a WoC?

Psssh. What matters more? Young WoCs' understanding of themselves as equal partners in the world, or hey-look-an-Oscar nominee?

What I'm wondering about is Suzanne had no issues with Jen playing the role.

That could just be the media interpretation of Suzanne thinking, with Phillip Pullman, that it doesn't do to have the author wade in and be a diva when they don't know thing one about movie-making.

Even if the movie-makers are getting it WRONG WRONG WRONG.

Authors sign contracts when they sell the rights to movie studios. Unless you are J.K. Fucking Rowling, those contracts include "restrictions" on your public comments regarding anything and everything about the film.

Because Suzanne, just like all authors at this point in the novels-to-movies game, knows that their job is to be Head Cheerleader once they've sold the rights and the movie gets cast.

Remember Anne Rice's sudden about-face regarding Tom Cruise as Lestat? She didn't just wake up and change her mind. There were some phone calls from some studio suits about the contract she signed. Suddenly, Tom Cruise was the best choice for Lestat EVER.

Oh, and that's not all:

Jen will have dark hair in the role, but that’s something movies can easily achieve. [Laughs]

"*laughs*" Are you fucking kidding me? This is fucking funny? Oh, racial slap in the face, you are fucking killing me here! I'm falling over! My sides are bursting! Can't keep that fucking grin off my face!

Right. Right. The hair color is the concern of the people. Right. Ok then. Well, I don't know about all of you, but I feel much, much better now that I know they will deal with the hair color. /sarcasm

*sigh*

Although, thanks for reminding me to go back and rent The Last Airbender for a dollar and laugh my ass off at how terrible it is. I have a bad movie festival coming up and we could use another really classy entry.

Ugh. I saw that news on AfterEllen.com yesterday, and it bummed me out. What made me even more irked, however, was that AE (which prides itself on being inclusive, etc.) didn't say that the casting choice was crap.

I'm totally with you on the title here. It's amazing how Hollywood just actively fails to learn sometimes.

ARRRGH.

And, again, it's not that they cast a white person to play this role, it's that extra little insult to injury, that they cast somebody who's ancestry is so clearly Northern European white.

Because how hard is it to find attractive, talented young women with Mediterranean, Hispanic, Mid-Eastern, or Southern-Slavic ancestry?

Straight black hair, olive skin, we even have the same gray eyes.

Fucking hell, give the hyper-talented Nina Dobrev (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nina_Dobrev) some grey contacts and call it a day.

Well, good thing they can fix the HAIR COLOR!!!

Jennifer Lawrence was incredible in Winter's Bone, and this is likely to do her no good at all...

I apparently need to read these books. Several folks on my f-list have been talking about them and I am out o' the loop.

As for the casting choice...um, yeah...so not surprised.

Yes - do read them. BEFORE the movie comes out.
