My first thought was, wow, what's happened to school curricula? But then I realized how UNsurprised I was, knowing how many people are creating fake online personas on FB under their real names, and posting all about their fictitious exploits. So, yeah, these days, the lines between reality and fiction are blurrier for some folks.

Given that's from the Daily Mail, I'm going to go with references and a copy of the survey or it didn't happen ;)

That said, I kinda wouldn't be shocked, heh.

I would say something, but the numbers in America would probably be worse.

I was thinking the same thing! (Well, except I doubt most Americans know who Miss Marple or Blackadder are at all, but that's another story entirely...)

(Hi, lurker here, just popping in.)

Wait, though, there can be a big difference between "believes Fictional Character is/was real" and "believes Fictional Character is/was based on a real person." I mean, I don't believe Temperance Brennan (from Bones) is real, but I do believe she was based on the experiences of the author, Kathy Reichs (since she has said so multiple times). Depending on how the survey was worded, you might be getting some of that overlap.
