"Fremdschämen". It's awesome and translated it literally means being embarrassed on behalf of someone else.

I don't think I ever heard that word. Is it some sort of recent coinage? And is it actually in use as a verb? I mean, it seems rather redundant when you already say "ich schäme mich für jemanden". So would you say "ich fremdschäme mich für jemanden" for emphasis? To me that sounds really weird, and separated it's not any better with "ich schäme mich für jemanden fremd"? And if it's just used as a noun, why not "Fremdscham" rather than "Fremdschämen"?

There's a fairly nice basic article on it (here: http://www.literaturcafe.de/fremdschaemen-definition/ ) in German, but what it comes down to is that as a verb it's always "fremdschämen" and not "fremd schämen" and you'd use it in sentences as "ich hab mich fremdgeschämt" and the meaning of it is rather different than just the regular "schämen". It implies that you're embarrassed on behalf of someone who isn't aware of the embarrassing situation or blithely ignores it. And yes, if you do use it as a noun, although that's rare, you'd say "Fremdscham".
