Crab-Apple
Sep. 26th, 2003 09:46 amMy G5 arrived! I had techno-joy! I plugged everything in! I turned it on! My beautiful 23" display came alive! Just like Frampton!
And then, I tried to install software.
Now, you're thinking, oh no, conflicts and file corruption on a brand-new machine?
But no. Not even close. Because?
The SuperDrive won't open.
That's right, folks, the drive is just a teeeeeeny bit off, and when I hit the eject key, I hear the "clunk!" of enthusiasm as the drive tries to eject, the "whack" of surprise as the drive tray runs into the computer casing just a centimeter out of the gate, and then the "ca-thunk" of despair, as the thwarted tray returns to its home, defeated and alone, never having made it into the light to receive a disk.
I opened up the computer (wow, pretty) and re-seated the drive (wow, easy) - and now it opens -- halfway. The tray gets halfway out and then... stops.
If I *wanted* to, I could sliiiiiide a cd-rom into it and install software, but since I get the feeling that some, if not all, of this computer is going to be replaced, I think I'll wait.
I called Apple and they're on the case, and I have AppleCare, which means tech support, parts, and labor are 100% covered for 3 years. I also have Zippy, my small back-up laptop computer, and wireless internet, but still. Grrrr.
You know what's great about laptop computers with wireless internet? If you have to go to the bathroom? You can take them with you and stay online, chatting and posting and reading, from the can. Techno-joy knows no bounds.

Date: 2003-09-26 08:31 am (UTC)But oooooh! Computer envy!! Well, except for the broken bits, but hopefully that will be taken care of soon. I've got a friend who works at Apple, and every time I go over I have computer and monitor envy. He's got these gorgeous big ol' flat screen monitors... *sigh*

Date: 2003-09-26 09:22 am (UTC)My brother's school won an honorable mention in a Apple award program for stuff they did on their Macs. My brother made them all Mac (except for the crap in the office.) He is converting a generation of kids. Small school but still. . .
