So, I guess as evidence that A) I am totally immersed in television shows as the primary force of my life, and B) I couldn't imagine that he thought people didn't *know* --

I see this headline at eonline.com: "Dr. Kildare" comes out

and my first thought is "What, on DVD?"

And then I realized.

When I read the headline (of another article, before, titled something like, "Chamberlain speaks on being gay" or whatever), I was so confused. I'd thought he'd come out a billion years ago, but I didn't want to say something 'cause I thought I might've been wrong.

It seems so sad to me that people have felt the need to be closeted and secretive for so long. The man is 68 years old! and has known his orientation since his teens, and cites his age as being one of the reasons he *can* be out.

I hope young actors now don't feel this compulsion to hide.

Or other people, either.

ANd yeah, I thought he was gay too, but then I think that about a lot of actors. (And I think even more are bi.)

Sadly, they do - for fear of losing romantic leading roles. We'd like to believe people would still see the movies anyway, but no one's willing to take the risk - at least, not yet. And there's still plenty of evidence that people cannot separate the fantasy from the reality - if a woman finds an actor sexually attractive, and then finds out he's gay, most of the time this becomes an "I don't believe it!" instead of a "whatever" for her. What, his being gay ruins your fantasies? They're fantasies, dammit!

People annoy me.

Yeah, me too. This should make no difference. Maybe someday it won't. But meanwhile - it's causing a lot of suffering for no good reason.

I really believe that once people come to believe that people come with various sexual orientations and that's okay, this prejudice will change. And things are changing, radically - at least here in Canada.

But in Hollywood, it's like the dark ages.

Gee. I thought he came out years ago. There was no question in my mind that he was gay for, like, ever.

I thought "on DVD," FWIW.
