In Hebrew:

dam = blood

Adam = Man

Adama = EARTH (Blood of Man)

Seriously, am I *completely* out of the loop here, or what!?

And with the parallels to the Twelve Tribes, and the Diaspora, ...

...

*head explodey*

The original show was written by Mormons. Since they believe the lost tribes of Israel are the Native Americans, it all really does make a lot of sense.

And you throw in all the Greek mythology...

Someday we need to phone chat and I will tell you my theory on where this show is going.

I'm totally caught up, btw! Damn, this show rocks!

A friend of mine, who was very into & knowledgeable about Science Fiction authors, etc, told me way back many years ago that the original Battelstar Galactica was basically a retelling of the myths/beliefs of the Church of the Latter Day Saint (aka Mormon).

If I remember correctly, it was written and/or conceived originally by the SF author Orson Scott Card.

I've had two different friends (both big SF fans) explain it to me, and the second had been raised in that religion and so explained the parallels (but I don't really remember much at this point.)

Actually, even back in 1978 when I watched the original, I assumed Lorne Greene's character was named "Adama" because in a way he was the father, or progenitor, in a poetic sense, of remaining mankind. I never got into the Hebrew, but the connection to "Adam" seemed pretty obvious.

Oh yeah, the whole Mormon thing... it was.. eh, weird. I mean, the original show. This version seems to have kept only some elements. I do wonder if angels and demons will make an appearance, like in the old show.

But could they ever be as cool without Patrick MacNee?

No, no, I doubt they could achieve the same level of coolness ehehe...

Given the grim reality of this version of the show on every level imaginable, I would very seriously doubt it. Not while Ron Moore is in charge.

Ah, but see, I think he could do play off that, like he did with Pegasus. So, he has kept to some basic stuff from the old show, and the angels and demons bit, well, they weren't actual celestial beings, they were just aliens.

He's taken some broad concepts from the old show (e.g., another battlestar escaped) and that's as far as the old stories have gone. The Living Legend was basically an upbeat story of a charming, charismatic leader who motivates his troops to achieve goals that seem impossible. Not much in common with the new version of Cain there :) He kept the basic storyline of the two crews eventually working together to destroy a cylon target, but that's really it, and that storyline was pretty much overshadowed by the toxic interpersonal dynamics at play.

the angels and demons bit, well, they weren't actual celestial beings, they were just aliens.

I really doubt we're going to see aliens, either. :)

The (really truly ONLY) best thing about the original BSG was that it tapped into a passel of mythical, Jungian-type tropes -- which of course the ::whispers in case Mormons are around:: Masonic-inspired LDS Book of Mormon made up in the firsst place. It was a strong enough body of myth to set up a vigorous religion, so I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that it can give good strong bones to a dramatic series....
