dam = blood

Adam = Man

Adama = EARTH (Blood of Man)

Seriously, am I *completely* out of the loop here, or what!?

And with the parallels to the Twelve Tribes, and the Diaspora, ...

Actually, even back in 1978 when I watched the original, I assumed Lorne Greene's character was named "Adama" because in a way he was the father, or progenitor, in a poetic sense, of remaining mankind. I never got into the Hebrew, but the connection to "Adam" seemed pretty obvious.
