Daylight Savings Time reminder; Twitter poll

As the subject probably already has you muttering sounds of hatred, I doubt I need to write it out. Still -- Sunday marks the end beginning of Daylight Savings Time (thanks for the correction, starwatcher307), so don't forget to "Spring ahead" (kill me) one hour. This will ensure that by the time you wake up, the coffee shop will already be sold out of the Sunday New York Times.

Heh. I've got the Twitter thing running in Twitterific. I still don't particularly like it, but (a) I have observed the things that NASA is doing, which will enable me to speak semi-knowledgeably at the meeting I have to go to about it next week, and. Um. There is no (b).

Speaking of, how goes the QI-a-thon? Many of the QI-ers are on Twitter, including Alan Davies, Rob Brydon, and Phill Jupitus, and the QI elves have their own twitter called qikipedia, which twitters Quite Interesting factoids every day.

I used twitter way more when you could get real-time updates via jabber/aim. And the Canadian shortcode doesn't work anymore, so I can't get it on my phone. So I actually almost never check it anymore :( One of these days I'll organize a workaround.

I don't Twitter, for two reasons:

1) I am not Stephen Fry and therefore nothing I say will be of any interest to anyone else.

2) No one, other than Stephen Fry himself, is Stephen Fry and therefore nothing they say will be of any interest to anyone else.

In all seriousness, I kinda just don't get the point of Twitter, for the most part. I honestly don't give a crap what most people are doing/thinking/seeing 99.8% of the time. Why would I want to be forced to read about those things? Also, I find that most people, Stephen Fry excluded, post about nothing above the level of, "I'm going to the bathroom". I don't need to know these things. I don't think ANYONE needs to know these things.

Possibly you're reading the wrong people. :) But if it's not for you, it's not for you. I like seeing little updates from Rachel Maddow about what went on behind-the-scenes at her show that evening, or watching Wil Wheaton and Brent Spiner mock one another, or regular old folks like me post links to items of interest. It's been used to spread the word about missing children, about good causes, about events... you can keep up with real-time news in whatever most interests you, or you can follow people being silly. The thing about Twitter is it's limitless in use; you just have to go find the people who have the stuff you like and want.

I have managed to stay only peripherally aware of the existence of Twitter, enough to have some vague idea that it's a messagey thing that you can only send short messages on and there appear to be celebrities on it. Considering I loathe and avoid all forms of instant messaging, social networking sites and, indeed, talking on the telephone (have never owned a mobile and only use my landline about six times a year) I strongly suspect that it is Not My Thing.

Screw all this real-time connectivity, I like being an island, dammit.

I love Twitter; I joined because of two RL friends but scarcely used it. Then I watched the Stephen Fry Apple Store livetweets, fascinated. I stayed on and was there for #frylift . O the speed at which communities are formed! I was hooked.

I use TweetDeck because of its nifty separation of timeline, @replies and DMs. I'm taken with the AIR platform in general. And I have made firm friendships with probably more persons than I care to admit, most in England or Northern Europe, a dozen or two here and a couple in New Zealand. None of which I would probably have ever met in realspace, including you. And I have learned much from all of them, and continue to do so.
