I have stayed out of the OTW insanity since it began. I didn't even know how to begin to talk about it, and I didn't want to wade in while things were shaking out, and I didn't want to read things that were going to make me angry, because I knew it would just cause me impotent rage, since there was nothing I would be able to do.
I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH PEOPLE WHO DON'T LIKE/DON'T WANT TO PARTICIPATE IN THE OTW IF THEIR PHILOSOPHIES ARE IN DIRECT CONFLICT (bolded now for those who fail at reading comprehension and think I'm defending OTW, instead of what I'm actually doing, which is bitching about people who hide their identities so that they can say nasty things about OTW), but I am so done with people who are against the OTW with absolutely no facts to back up their opposition. They are the Teabagging Party when it comes to OTW: frothing at the mouth with blind hatred, but they have absolutely no fucking facts and they just believe whatever their mental, seething leaders say without bothering with critical thought, or fact-finding of their own.
In case anyone reading this thinks that I'm somehow part of the OTW "machine," let me be crystal clear. I have no part in OTW. I'm not on the board, I'm not a beta-tester, I'm not a coder, I'm not part of the PR department, I'm not anything at all when it comes to the project. But I am DONE with this fucking insane bullshit Teabagger-mentality ignorance that has spread through some sections of fandom that are just spoiling for a fight with the OTW, because they've heard from someone who knows someone who said something they didn't like.
I have fucking HAD IT.
Whiny, shitty fucks who bitch about the OTW, but create sock-puppet accounts to do it so no one who knows them will know it was *them*, can shove it up their own asses. Cowards. Bullies. Those of you who have a beef with the OTW and have created sock-puppet accounts just to write about it? Show your faces, you craven pieces of shit. How dare you hide so that nobody who knows you finds out what you think. Afraid of conflict with people you know? Coward. You want to dish it out while not having to own it. Put up or shut up.

Date: 2010-01-04 07:18 am (UTC)That's so ridiculous. Are people incapable of printing things out or saving them to their hard drives?
In the rush to jump on the mod-worshipping bandwagon (and yes, it is grabby) and desperately hope they'll become famous for their fanworks and hopefully picked up by some series as a result, have the "writers" in favor of this policy completely lost all common sense?
"In the spirit of Yuletide." I can't believe all the nastiness and namecalling and bitching about people who just want to keep control of work they created. Aren't you all sick of your own hypocrisy yet?

Date: 2010-01-04 09:14 am (UTC)I keep seeing this thrown out there. It isn't always an option. Not everyone who participates in fandom can afford their own computer. Instead, they rely on public computers or are lucky enough to have jobs that allow them to use work computers on down time. Also, some people are not in a position where they can freely be 'out' fannishly and must hide all fannish participation - this means no stories saved on shared personal computers and no stories printed off where someone might find them. There was a brief time where I was in such a position so I know how difficult it can be. Thankfully, that time is long past for me, but it isn't for others.

In most cases I agree. I hate, hate, hate following a link to a favorite story only to find the author has removed it from the web, but in the end it is the author's choice to do so, for whatever reasons. However, this particular situation is different - authors signed up and posted their stories knowing that the rules state all stories would remain a part of the archive permanently. This wasn't a hidden rule, slipped in unannounced. All authors knew this going in and they all made the decision to abide by the archive rules. No one was ever forced to sign up and participate in Yuletide.
Now the archive is moving and authors are allowed to delete their stories. Not encouraged, no, and yes, there is a penalty - the author will not be allowed to write for Yuletide in the future. I, personally, think this is fair. Yuletide is the sum of all its parts and it's sad and frustrating to see even a tiny part disappear.

If people want to keep a tight control on their own work, they shouldn't sign up to archives where the rules have clearly stated, for years, that stories would NEVER BE TAKEN DOWN. Not "stories will never be taken down as long as everything remains the same as it always is," not "stories will never be taken down as long as yuletide is hosted in the same place," NEVER. Period. This could not be more clear in the FAQ.
I understand that some people like to have more control over their stories than others do. But if people seriously feel like they cannot deal with other people making decisions about how/where/who hosts their stories, then maybe they shouldn't participate in gift exchanges where the rules clearly state that giving up some control of your story *is part of the package*.

3) Aren't you all sick of your own hypocrisy yet?
Er, you have a plank in your eye....
We'll talk about my hypocrisy (which, uh, doesn't exist, because this post isn't about the OTW, but about people avoiding having to suck it up and own their words) once you sign in and use your real lj account to post this. Otherwise, in case you haven't noticed from the content of this entire post, you should be sick of your hypocrisy.

Date: 2010-01-05 09:19 pm (UTC)Look, you're just flinging your own feces now. I know there are people who are opposed to this move who manage *not* to fabricate motives for people they disagree with, but unfortunately people like you have been far more prominent. And infuriating.
