No, this isn't a joke. Just because he's a liberal, eggheaded, New England Governor whose campaign is called "Dean for America" and he's married to a medical doctor doesn't mean he can't also be real.

Dean for America is the website of Vermont Governor Howard Dean, who is in the running to be the Democratic nominee for the Presidential election of 2004.

He appears to be the only Dem running against Bush, and not alongside him. He is certainly the only one of the hopefuls who didn't close ranks behind the President and agree not to disagree with him on the war.

There are Howard Dean meet-ups happening on April 2nd in cities all over the United States.

Read his speeches.

View his stands on the major issues of today.

This is the man who, as his re-election day loomed, signed Civil Unions into law in Vermont while 60% of the population of the state was against it. He was still re-elected.

We all say things like "Yeah, but he'll never win." And he may not. But he surely won't if we don't do something to help.

I knew there was something I liked about you. :-)

I'm going to be volunteering for him during my short stint in the U.S. presuming he's still in the race by then. So yes, let's all do our best to keep him there!

Sister!

I posted a startlingly similar (if less complete) entry about Dean at the start of February when I first heard about him, because...yes...I can't think of another "maybe" who hasn't already annoyed me by being virtually indistinguishable from a Bush drone. Yes, yes, I understand that a sitting politician (especially one currently serving on the national level in the house or senate) has pressures to conform beyond what Dean has, but you know what? I just don't care.

BTW, could you write to me at - beth-h at mrks dot org - and give me Terri's email addy? She and I were talking last night and I completely forgot to find out how to reach her.

I've been a Dean fan for ages, which was cemented around the time he got the Civil Union thing through the state lege. I'm glad to see that people are excited about him.

On my cynical days I agree with my husband that Dean's probably unelectable: since VT is such a small state, people are going to argue that he couldn't duplicate his budget and health care successes on a national scale, and since VT is so liberal, people in the West and the South are unlikely to consider Dean's candidacy seriously. Sigh. That said, though, I dont intend to give up before this thing starts; lord knows he's the most promising candidate for president I've seen in at least the ten years since I started paying attention to politics...

Dean's the man.

I've been following Dean since he signed the civil unions law -- he's managed to tick off a few Vermonters by focusing much of his attention out-of-state in the last couple of years, but the plus side of that is that he's forged alliances with liberal dems and (even Greens) across the country, and has more experience with national issues. I was all for Kerry until he signed Bush's resolution, myself, but after that? Sayonara, Johnny.

Of course Dean won't win if he doesn't get a viable shot. So let's give him one. Enough people are angry at Bush that they could be willing to vote in entirely the opposite direction come voting time.

I wish I could go to one of the Meetups! Argh.

Definitely, Dean is the candidate I've been most impressed by, even if I disagree with him on gun control.

Already on the bandwagon. Donated money this week. If you go to one of the meetups, let me know.

I agree that he probably doesn't stand a chance, but he's a voice that needs to be heard and supported. I'm there.

Thanks for passing along the info, hon. I'm going, and I've just invited pretty much everyone I know.

Heh. Except I live in Illinois, so I know CM-B. She was my Senator, and I wouldn't vote for her for President.

Well, she tried to curry favor with the Chicago Tribune by getting them a huge tax cut (it backfired), she skipped Freshman Senate Orientation Week to vacation with a dictator guilty of enormous human rights violations (she was the only member of the Senate to oppose sanctions on Nigeria), and she's also just not very bright. Her election to the Senate, while striking a blow both for blacks and women in government, was a fluke, and it's a shame that she was the person to embody that symolism.
